Creston and Union County are located in the beautiful rolling hillsides of southwest Iowa, 75 miles southwest of Des Moines and 100 miles southeast of Omaha. It is the perfect place to spend your next vacation or holiday. Our many “High Lakes” offer an array of outdoor recreational opportunities unmatched in SW Iowa. Over 2,100 acres of water, including five lakes and over 6,000 acres of publicly owned parks, woodlands, prairie and wetlands. All conveniently located within a 25 mile radius. Here you can also experience our railroad history or that of the Mormons who passed through on their way to Utah. Our paved Park to Park Trail of almost nine miles extends from McKinley Park in Creston through the campground at Green Valley State Park. Another six miles of grass surface trail, suitable for walking and mountain biking, continues from the trail at Green Valley campground around the lake.
The residents of Creston have also been painting murals for a number of years, with the first being created in 1983 and a couple, years before that. Mural Magic as we call it really began in 2011 when our local high school art teacher began painting a mural a year with her students. Since then she and Creston: Arts have invited muralist from across the country and internationally to come and paint and offer their talents along with many of our residents – both young and not so young. With 50 plus murals currently in Creston and 30 located in a two block area of Uptown Creston it is hard to pick one mural that stands out. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Please see below several examples of the murals throughout Creston by clicking on the various links.
